Social and economic implications of nutrition surveys and other epidemiological evidence.

چکیده
Introduction The surveys and other evidence which are drawn upon are part of the general scheme of surveillance of nutrition in Britain. Before 1968 this was by means of running indices (Berry & Hollingsworth, 1963), helped out by small-scale surveys and other work aimed to throw light on specific points. In 1968-1971, under the aegis of the Committee on Medical Aspects of Food Policy, more detailed surveys were made of old people, pregnant women, pre-school children and schoolchildren of various ages, totalling about 4000-4500 people, the aim being to establish a baseline. In 1971 an expert Subcommittee on Nutritional Surveillance was set up to advise in the first place on what measures were needed to monitor the effects of various changes in welfare and school milk, and meals, and the result of their advice has been a return largely to a system of running indices, better than before.

The Fetal Origins Hypothesis (FOH), put forward in the epidemiological literature and later flourished in the economics literature, suggests that the time in utero is a critical period for human development. However, much attention has been paid to the consequences of fetal exposures to more extreme natural shocks, while less is known about fetal exposures to milder but more commonly experience...

Whereas common infectious and parasitic diseases such as malaria and the HIV/AIDS pandemic remain major unresolved health problems in many developing countries, emerging non-communicable diseases relating to diet and lifestyle have been increasing over the last two decades, thus creating a double burden of disease and impacting negatively on already over-stretched health services in these count...
متن کاملPhytate and Phytase in Poultry Nutrition
There is a distinct possibility that phytate negatively influences protein and energy utilisation in poultry and, as these influences would be ameliorated by phytase, there are substantial, practical implications. Despite several thousand scientific papers and a rapidly growing market the use of phytase and the importance of phytate in practical poultry nutrition remains an area of some confusi...

The paper focuses on regional trade agreements and economic co-operation and develops a new appropriate approach to study their impact on growth and trade. The approach is based on an endogenous trade-growth theory and novelly specified in an economic integration (expenditure) framework which is the conceptual foundation of regional trade agreements. Importantly, it also appropriately takes int...
